CHENNAI (CHENNAI): The city is expected to have 100 new electric buses.On Thursday, the Institute of Road Transport (IRT) conducted a tender for the German Bank-funded initiative on behalf of the transport department.IRT has sought bids from car manufacturers who can supply buses and charging facilities for MTC Chennai.All of these buses will be low-floor air-conditioned, with a seating capacity of 36, including a wheelchair-bound one, according to the bid documents.

There are also requirements for a wheelchair ramp to be made.Chennai is one of the few metros to join the electric car movement, according to transportation activist R Rengachari, who said that Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune are the last metros to do so.He said, We hope the state government doesnt halt the process further.Based on the success of the initial operational launch in early 2023, a senior transportation department official said that the purchase would be a precursor to a much larger order of 400 buses for Chennai and other Tamil Nadu cities.

TN has yet to finalize the charging infrastructure, and it is open to both the categories: overnight charging and 10-30 minutes at the end of each journey.According to him, the decision will be made after a bid evaluation.
