A Year After Woman Set Herself on Fire, Uttar Pradesh MP Is Cleared of Rape

Atul Rai, an Uttar Pradesh parliamentarian who has been in prison since 2019, was cleared of a rape charge today by a Varanasi court.Due to other pending lawsuits against him, Atul Rai was able to return to Ghosi, the eastern part of the state, as a Lok Sabha MP on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.Since winning the 2019 national election, a 24-year-old woman from eastern Uttar Pradesh accused Atul Rai of rape in 2019.Atul Rai raped the woman in 2018 at his Varanasi home, according to her complaint to the police.

The woman's cousin also died of burns.Before setting themselves on fire, she and her friend shot a Facebook Live video.They accused the police in Uttar Pradeshs Varanasi, where she had lodged a lawsuit accusing her of colluding with the arrested MP and his relatives, according to the video.Both said they expected no justice.Atul Rai is also an accused in a suicide case brought by Uttar Pradesh police in the case, and his bail was rejected by the Allahabad High Court in this case in July.

Atul Rai's brother filed a forgery lawsuit against the woman in Varanasi in November 2020.In the same year, the Supreme Court allowed Atul Rai to take the oath of office as a parliamentarian while on probation.After his counsel argued that he had not been sworn in since his election, the Allahabad High Court had granted him two-day parole for his oath in parliament.
