New Delhi (India), November 24 : Entities should check Aadhaar identity before accepting it in physical or electronic form as a proof of identity of an individual, according to a statement released by the Union Ministry of Electronics and Technology (UIDAI).In a statement, the United States Department of Electronics and Technology (UIDAI) said that verification of Aadhaar includes unscrupulous parties and anti-social groups from entering the identification document. It also promotes use safety and reasserts the UIDAI's position that any 12-digit number is not aadhaar.Tampering with Aadhaar documents can be detected by offline verification, according to the statement, adding that tampering is a punishable offence punishable by Section 35 of the Aadhaar Act, and that the state must provide appropriate instructions so that when Aadhaar is presented as a proof of identity, authentication or verification of the holder is performed by the entity concerned.

Further, any Aadhaar type — Aadhaar letter, e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar PVC card, and m-Aadhaar — can be verified using the QR codes on them, as demonstrated by the document's mAadhaar application or Aadhaar QR code reader. The QR code reader is available for free download on Android and iOS-based smartphones, as well as window-based applications, according to a statement, adding that residents may also voluntarily use their Aadhaar numbers to establish their identity by presenting their Aadhaar in both paper or electronic format, according to the release.
