COIMBATORE: Coconut and copra prices will remain stagnant until December, according to experts from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).The hopes of farmers have been stifled by the prediction that the festival season will raise the prices of coconut and copra prices.A kilogram of good quality coconut will cost Rs 13-14, according to the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies (CARDS) project-funded price forecasting scheme. The farmers have been concerned about the falling price of copra.

Experts have compared the prices for coconut and copra in the Avalpoonthurai Regulated Market of Erode district and Perundurai Cooperative Marketing Society for the past 15 years to arrive at the target price. In 2021-22, Tamil Nadu will produce 35.15 lakh tonne of coconuts from a cultivable area of 4.44 lakh hectares. The biggest coconut growing regions are Coimbatore, Tirupur, Thanjavur, Dindigul, and Kanyakumari.Experts said that the festival season would increase the demand for coconut in the domestic market, but that the state and other states' surplus production in the current season would not allow prices to rise.
