New Delhi, November 26, 2017: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a letter to the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday, quoting media reports that six patients lost vision after botched up cataract surgery at a private hospital in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, and the state's director general of police, requesting a detailed report on the case, including the status of the FIR posed in connection with the incident, as well as the patients' compensation, if any.The Commission has found that the content of media reports, if true, constitutes human rights abuses by the victims.According to a statement by the Commission, it has sent notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, requesting a detailed report on the status of the FIR registered in relation to the case, as well as any relief offered to the victims, according to a release from the commission.The Commission also requested that the report include details of whether the hospital had received prior permission from district authorities before holding a free eye surgery camp.
