AMARAVATI: The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-V) has revealed that alcohol intake in the state is much lower than in other neighboring states, amid a raging debate over the state's increasing alcohol consumption.Alcoholists in the state's 15th-age bracket are much less likely to consume alcohol than those in the bordering states, which include Telangana, Chattisgarh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu.According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-V), the AP stood slightly above the national average in alcohol consumption.According to the National Alcohol Use Survey, almost 11.5 percent of the population of AP is drinking alcohol, relative to 9.5 percent.

Around 24 percent of the population aged 15 to 64 are drinking alcohol in Telangana, according to the National Highway Society, while it is around 19 percent in Chattisgarh and 16 percent in Odisha.Around 12.27 percent of the Tamil Nadu population and 13.37 percent of Puduchery were drinking alcohol, according to the survey.Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is making sincere efforts to curb liquor consumption in the state by a series of steps.In the last three years, the state government has weeded out 42,000 belt shops and cut grocery liquor stores by nearly 30%.

According to him, the state government has established 15 de-addiction centers to help drug users release themselves from their habits.According to him, the chief minister had also directed the government to install breath monitors at all toll plazas to reduce accidents on highways.He observed that a sustained campaign against alcohol consumption is underway to reduce the number of people who consume alcohol as any sudden decision on prohibition would boomerang.Karnataka and Kerala, which attracts more visitors than the AP, are interesting in that they have less alcohol consumption.
