England head coach Matthew Mott hopes Ben Stokes will retire from ODI . Mott says he would back any decision he made .
London, November 15: England head coach Matthew Mott is hoping for Ben Stokes' ODI retirement in order to compete in the 2023 World Cup in India.Stokes declared his retirement from 50-over cricket earlier this year, citing the challenges of coping with a demanding schedule. In 2019, he played a match-winning knock of 92 unbeaten runs (84 plus eight more in the Super Over) against New Zealand at Lords.Mott said he had not yet considered Stokes' possibility of leaving the ODI.
When Mott spoke to me about his ODI retirement, he said he should do what is right for English cricket. One of the first things I said was that I would back any decision he made. But I told him that he didnt have to retire as he could just not play 50-overs for a long time.I agree with you that you can always retire. It's going to be a World Cup year, and we won't play much T20 cricket for a long time, but it will be up to him, according to ESPNcricinfo. The more we can take out of him, the better.Hes doing an outstanding job as the Test captain, but he is also the captain of England's Test squad, which has improved its image by winning six out of seven games at home in 2022, Mott believes that this will encourage Stokes to return to ODIs.
