BENGALURU: Several of the BBMP wards have been named after historical, mythological, and cultural figures of Karnataka in the process of delimitation. On Thursday, the draft delimitation report was published.Dr Rajkumar (146), Kanneshwara Rama (36), Veera Madakari (37), Ranadheera Kanteerava (43), Vijayanagara Krishna Devaraya (46), M Visvesvaraya (46) and Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar (47) are the most prominent among the wards named after the personalities.Ward 208 has been named Deendayal, after Deendayal Upadhyaya, one of the founders of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the previous incarnation of the BJP.

Though naming wards after technocrat-statesman M Visvesvaraya and thespian Dr Rajkumar may seem to be aimed at Kannada enthusiasts, the occasion has also been used to debunk history in Karnataka, honoring names such as Madakari Nayaka, a Chitradurga chief, and Ranadheera Kanteerava, a sobriquet for Mysuru king Kanteerava Nara Lesser-known figures from the freedom struggle have been revived: Kanneshwara Rama, a thief turned freedom fighter, and Veera Sindhura Lakshmana, a popular freedom fighter.Although the name wards after historical names is not new, the idea of naming wards after them is certainly new.Ward 1 of the BBMP was named after Kempegowda, the chieftain who built Bengaluru, during the previous renaming procedure. The town is in Yelahanka, where the Kempegowdas' origins are said to have been found.
