Washington, United States, May 15: In a White House statement, US President Joe Biden congratulated Abu Dhabi's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on his election as President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday, saying that the UAE is a vital ally of the United States.Sheikh Mohammed was recalled by President Obama for being at the forefront of the US-UAE partnership.Sheikh Mohammed, whom I met with many times as Vice President when he was Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince, has long been at the forefront of this endeavor, he said.The President expressed excitement to work with Sheikh Mohammed to continue strengthening the links between the two countries and families.

According to Khaleej Times, the new president was selected from among the members of the Federal Supreme Council.The decision was taken at a meeting by the seven sheikhdoms of the United Arab Emirates.It comes after President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who had been in office since 2004, died on Friday after a long illness.Sheikh Mohamed has previously served as the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces since January 2005.
