By Friday AM, Cyclone Mandous will probably become severe: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Thursday that the Mandous Cyclone would become intense and increase intensity by Friday morning . The storm is likely to maintain the strength of the Severe Cyclonic Storm until early morning on 9th December, before fading slowly into a cyclonic storm by the forenoon of 9th December .

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) (India), December 8: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Thursday that the Mandous Cyclone would become intense and increase intensity by Friday morning.It is likely to maintain the strength of the Severe Cyclonic Storm until early morning on 9th December, before fading slowly into a cyclonic storm by the forenoon of 9th December.According to an official statement issued by the IMD, the storm would continue to travel west-northwestwards and cross north Tamilnadu, Puducherry, and the adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts, around Mahabalipuram, as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kmph, gusting to 85 kmph around midnight on November 9.In the meantime, all shops on the beach were closed due to the cyclone warning, and fishing boats were moored far off the beaches for safety.

According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm Mandous over the Southwest Bay of Bengal turned almost west-northwestwards at a speed of 13 kmph in the last 6 hours, intensified into a Severe Cyclonic storm and lay centerd at 1730 hours IST today, the 08th December 2022, about 250 kilometers northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 320 kilometers east-northeast of Jaffna An official said that the Eastern Region Indian Coast Guard has taken preventive action to inform the coastal population, and that state disaster management authorities have been asked to issue alerts through local print, television, and electronic media.The cyclonic storm is located about 420 kilometers east-southeast of Karaikal and 520 kilometers southeast of Chennai.
