BHUBANESWAR: Saroj Das, the chief mechanical engineer of Paradip Port Authority (PPA), and three others were arrested by the CBI on Friday in a bribery investigation involving Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL), which is owned by industrialist Mahimananda Mishra.Saroj is the only three people arrested in the United States, including Sumanta Rout (a conduit), Sankha Subhra Mitra (chief, port operations of KCT Group) and Surya Narayan Sahoo, DGM (operations) of OSL.A lawsuit has also been filed against OSL, Debapriya Mohanty of KCT Group, Charchit Mishra, a CEO of OSL, and other unknown individuals.Charchit is the youngest son of Mahimananda, whose eldest son Chandan was quizzed at the CBI office until late on Thursday.

Saroj had a habit of demanding a bribe.After workers reportedly damaged the conveyor belt while unloading cargo, Saroj has allegedly taken Rs 25 lakh bribe from OSL.Saroj saved a lot of money by repairing and replacing the conveyor belt, but with the support of Sumanta and a director of OSL (Charchit Mishra), he made it replace it at PPAs expense.According to a CBI officer, the intermediary allegedly demanded Rs 60 lakh as a bribe on behalf of the chief mechanical engineer.

Sumanta is accused of taking a Rs 25 lakh bribe from OSL in Cuttack.Saroj reportedly booked a house with a Bhubaneswar-based real estate builder, who he gave him Rs 10 lakh.Sumanta was intercepted by CBI officers in Paradip on Thursday and he was recovered Rs 5 lakh.During the recovery process, Rs 18.30 lakh more was recovered from him.
