Chess Olympiad Torch is warmly welcomed by Chd.

The Chess Olympiad Torch Relay is the first place in Indias history, marking the countrys 100th anniversary . The relay will be carried to 75 cities for 40 days, before reaching Mahabalipuram .

Chandigarh: On Thursday, the first-ever Chess Olympiad Torch Relay reached Chandigarh by starting from Leh and passing over the mighty Himalayas, with stops at Srinagar, Jammu, Dharamsala, and Shimla.Banwari Lal Purohit, the Punjab governor and UT Administrator, was presented with the torch by Grandmaster Deep Sengupta at Rock Garden, here.The torch was carried from Rock Garden to the Sukhna Lake and Rose Garden before making its way to the Panjab University and Sector 42 lake.Purohit said in his address that: We are proud that a sport that began its history in Delhi and has left a lasting impression on others around the world, UT Cricket Association President Sanjay Tandon, SSP Kuldeep Chahal, and Prof Anil Raina of Chandigarh Chess Association were among those present at the historic event on June 19, which incorporated the relay.

The torch will be given to chess grandmasters at various designated locations.For the first time this year, the International Chess Body, FIDE, has introduced the Chess Olympiad Torch, which is part of the Olympic tradition but was never used in the Chess Olympiad.The Chess Olympiad Torch Relay is the first place in India's history, marking the country's 100th anniversary.It is the first time India will host this prestigious event.

The AICF had earlier announced two Indian teams in the open and womens divisions, attracting 343 participants in both divisions.
