KOLKATA (KOLKATA): Mamata Banerjee, the head of state, expressed displeasure with hawker encroachment on Thursday, claiming, Just as we have cleared up a town, I see some people sitting in the area with their wares.Hothat dekhi dokan boshiye dichchhe.Do you realise that if our own neighbourhoods are constantly filled with this kind of population, how will we even walk through our paras? The CM said, Of course, I am against evicting hawkers.

I wanted hawker cards for the same reason.According to her, the hawker card would discourage indiscriminate entry. To address the issue, she said she would consult with her ministers and councillors. On Thursday, a KMC official who has been an integral part of a hawker transformation program said plans were on to distribute cards to cities' hawkers who have been designated as bona fide members of the hawking community.

They would be issued with ID cards to protect their rights under a national hawker rehabilitation initiative in consultation with the state, he said. However, once the cards are issued, KMC will have to drive to free cities' carriageways of rampant hawking.
