Consumer groups have demanded that a long-pending regulation on front of the package labeling (FoPL) be immediately disclosed in the interest of public safety. This is one of the eight point charter of demands that the Consumer Coordination Council (CCC) of India, as well as the Consumer Protection Association, Agartala, intend to submit to the food safety authority FSSAI.Since the implementation of the FoFL, CUTS International Director George Cheriyan said in a statement that the Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) has already spent a number of years educating and consulting stakeholders.According to him, it has enabled those governments to save money from direct and indirect healthcare expenditures. He said that a formal, simple, and mandatory FoPL was first proposed by an expert commission established by FSSAI in 2013.
In 2019, the FSSAI published a draft notification on Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations. The FSSAI delinked FoPL from general labelling requirements in 2019 December. The country is yet to adopt any rules in relation to FoPL, though ongoing discussions are ongoing.
