Customers of 13L LPG in 2 Telugu states did not request refills

In Hyderabad, an LPG refill costs Rs 1,105, while it was only Rs 500 before the Modi government took power in 2014 . In recent years, subsidy on refills has dropped to low amounts, putting consumers in a double blow .

In the fiscal 2021-22, at least 13lakh liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) consumers in the two Telugu states did not avail of a single refill.Although a 50% price increase over a three-year period is being cited as the cause, gas dealers, retailers, and customers say the trend was exacerbated by increasing reliance on food delivery apps, dormant and multiple connections in households, as well as migration of families. In Hyderabad, an LPG refill costs Rs 1,105, while it was only Rs 500 before the Modi government took power in 2014.Due to inflationary pressure and sinking incomes as a result of the pandemic, the poor are often unable to buy a refill.

According to a consumer, the monthly budget for other items has also increased. As per a study released in Parliament recently, the increase in gas prices has increased demand for firewood in rural Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where over 6.5lakh and 6.2lakh LPG consumers respectively have not gone for a single refill.
