Demand for the hiring of specially educated teachers in classrooms

Bhubaneswar (Bhubaneswar): Members of the Odisha Special Educator Federation for Divyang (OSEFD), a body that advocates for high quality education for children with special needs (CwSN), have urged the state government to include specially qualified teachers in schools to help teach CwSN students.According to Ayusman Choudhury, joint secretary of OSEFD, the Supreme Court had ruled in an order passed last year that special teachers be appointed in general schools in every state and union territory of India.Odisha should designate teachers with specially trained staff, he said.Thousands of children with disabilities are attending normal schools, but they need special trained teachers to grasp the topics quickly.

In 2020-21, up to 1,02,826 children with disabilities (CWSN) from all 30 districts of the state were enrolled in normal classes, according to official statistics.11,227 students were diagnosed with a mental disorder and 10,493 were diagnosed with a hearing impairment.It has 5,456 students with blindness, 4,907 with cerebral palsy, and 454 with autism spectrum disorder.Teachers with degrees such as diploma, BEd, and MEd in special education, who have registered their names with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), are being considered as Sikhya Sahayakjunior teachers, according to the state government's affidavit submitted in the Supreme Court.

In addition, 575 professionals with special education certificates have been re-elected as state's block resource teachers (BRT).According to Rakesh Kumar Sahu, a federation member, the state has 62 special education training institutes with 1846 students.Hundreds of students sit idle at home each year after completing their special education course and registering themselves with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).For the sake of CwSN students and trained teachers, we request that the state government place special trained teachers in the general schools, he said.
