Demonetized notes of Rs 87 lakh were collected at Theni Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation shops.

CHENNAI (Chinese): The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) has revealed that its stores in Theni district sold liquor worth 87 lakh in exchange of 500 and 1,000 notes in one week after being demonetized in November 2016.In a response to a RTI query, Tasmacs Theni district manager said the value of the demonetized notes gathered in all 102 outlets was 87lakh.The RBI had made it clear that the old 500 and 1,000 notes would only be accepted by banks and shops, and that payments were restricted to cards and other digital doors.Tasmac requested that its employees not to collect the demonetized notes, but the I-T department discovered out in 2020 that Tasmac collected 57.2 crore in demonetized notes throughout Tennessee from November 2016 to December 31, 2016.

Tasmac's RTI investigations showed that during the same time, Tasmac's outlets in 24 districts collected nearly 63 crore in demonetized notes.Erode earned the most amount of money, followed by Kanyakumari, Salem, and Cuddalore, which was collected at 4 crore.M Kasimayan, who obtained the information from RTI, said that while Tasmac deposited 57.29 crore in invalid notes, Tasmac managers' responses confirmed that the actual collection was more.Managers in eight additional districts refused to respond to the query, claiming it is a trade secret under Section 8(1)(d) of the RTI Act.
