NEW DELHI: After his unopposed election to the top job in a National Sports Federation (NSF), ex India captain Dilip Tirkey became Hockey India's first player-president on Friday. On October 1, Hockey India elections were scheduled to take place, but the results were not announced until the deadline. There were no candidates for any post.Tirkey, who filed his candidature for President of Hockey Odisha, was elected on Friday after Uttar Pradesh Hockey chief Rakesh Katyal and Hockey Jharkhands Bhola Nath Singh withdrawed their nominations.Former player Kalyan Chaubey became the head of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), recently.Tirkey believes that athletes can also serve as administrators.Former players should be drafted into the sports administration because they know where to focus, according to me.Tirkey said that Sourav Ganguly was in the CAB first and then the BCCI and is doing really well. I am delighted that Hockey India has nominated a former player like me as its president for the first time.Players go through many stages in their careers, and they gain more experience, the former full back said.Adille Sumariwalla, a former player, is the president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).Bhola Nath has been elected secretary general unopposed. Tirkey, the country's most capped player with 412 international caps, says the next generation of players must be prepared.Junior players are in need of a specific training program, he said, to prepare the next generation of drag-flickers and goalkeepers, and the emphasis will also be on team conditioning. We've all seen how crucial our drag-flicker and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh played in the Olympics, but after that, the next generation players will also have to be developed. There is also a proposal to relaunch the Hockey League, according to him. It will be discussed with the committee and then discussed with the executive board, and will be carried forward.Bhola Nath said he pulled his candidature for presidents to allow a big player like Tirkey to take over. After careful discussion with Dilip Tirkey, I resigned. He is a hero, and we have decided to partner for the good of Indian hockey. We will also contribute to the improvement of the sport at the grassroots level and make domestic hockey stronger.Asima Ali (vice president) of Hockey Jammu & Kashmir, Karnatakas SVS Subramanya Gupta (vice president), Sekar J Manoharan (treasurer), Hockey Rajasthans Arti Singh (joint secretary) and Sunil Malik (joint secretary) are the other elected members of Hockey India.Arun Kumar Sarswat (Hockey Rajasthan), Asrita Lakra (Hockey Jharkhand), Gurpreet Kaur (Delhi Hockey), V Sunil Kumar (Kerala Hockey) and Tapan Kumar Das (Assam Hockey) are the five executive board members.
