DUI case: Kerala HC reverses decision to withdraw murder charges against IAS officer

Kerala High Court drops the murder charge against IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman . The case involves the death of a Malayalam newspaper bureau chief, KM Basheer .

Kochi (Kerala) (India), November 25, 2019 : The Kerala High Court dropped the lower court's decision to drop the murder charge against IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman in connection with a case involving the death of a journalist, KM Basheer, in 2019.The court stayed the order for two months, according to the Kerala Government's appeal.The state government wanted to put aside the order of Thiruvananthapuram District Sessions Court to drop the murder charge.The sessions court dismissed the murder charges after reviewing the discharge petitions of IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman and co-accused Wafa Firoz, who was travelling with him at the time of the accident on August 3, 2019.Both defendants face 304 A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash and negligent driving) of the IPC and sections 184, 185, and 188 of the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), respectively.The case involves KM Basheer, the bureau chief of a Malayalam newspaper, who was killed after his bike was allegedly hit by the IAS officer's car in the night.After his service, the Kerala Government dismissed the IAS officer from his post of Alappuzha District Collector a few months earlier.
