Kochi (Kochi): On Thursday, a high-level commission headed by water resources department secretary Pranab Jyothi Nath carried out an inspection at the Vaduthala backwater site, where the water flow is blocked by the sedimentation under the railway bridge leading to the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT).Recently, the High Court appointed a committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the construction of a bund under the bridge, which is reportedly causing flood in large areas on the banks of Periyar.Members of the committee carried out a detailed survey of the sedimentations between each pillar of the bridge by sea.Baji Chandran, the superintending engineer for the Kerala Engineering Research Institute (KERI), Souprabha N, E Rema of Cochin Port Trust (CPT), G Keshavachandran of RVNL, and M K Ajayakumar of Afcons are other members of the committee.

During the previous monsoon, the bund-like structure that was built in the backwaters in 2009 to enable the construction of the railway line to ICTT in Vallarpadam had caused floods in different areas of the city, including the Kalamassery and Eloor regions.Last year, the disaster management department directed the CPT to remove the sedimentation. However, the CPT had pressed the HC to address it with skepticism about the state's assertion that it is the CPT that should clean up the sedimentation.
