India Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) on December 10: Jammu and Kashmir is the only place in the world to produce the highest quality Bivoltine silk.Other products of international quality have also their origin in the valley, according to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF).The country's sericulture sector employs 9.76 million workers in rural and semi-urban areas.The industry is one of the country's largest contributors to foreign exchange reserves.
India is known for four distinct types of natural silk: Mulberry, Eri, Tasar, and Muga.India produces 2657 metric tonnes (MT) of silk from April to December 2021, according to the country.According to statistics from IBEF, India's total silk production was 34,903 tonnes in 2021-2022, up by 3.4 percent year over year (33,770 tonnes), the most popular silk producing states are Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.During the years 2021-22, Karnataka contributed to around 32% of the country's total silk production. According to the ITC report 2000, silk accounts for about 0.2 per cent of total textile fibre production on the globe, with annual income ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000, followed by Rs 100,000 to 150,000 for 26.66 per cent and 20 per cent of sericulture farmers, respectively.According to the study, silk fabrics and made-ups, and silk readymade garments account for the most exported silk products from India.Silk waste (11.3 percent), silk carpets (44.3 percent), and natural silk yarn (2.8 percent) are the mainstays of Indias silk and silk exports.The country exports to more than 30 countries around the world.
