PARIS (Paris) – For the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, FIFA will allow countries to select up to 26 players, reducing the maximum squad size by three for the tournament, which takes place on November 21-December 18.FIFA said in a tweet that the number of players to be on the final list has been increased to at least 23 players, with a maximum of 26.According to the European club season's governing body, the decision to extend squads was made because of the need to maintain additional flexibility due to the unusualness of this year's tournament.FIFA also considered the larger picture of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on squads before and during tournaments.

Since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, national teams have assembled squads of 23 players for the World Cup and European Championship.At international tournaments, only 22 players were allowed in each squad.Last week, footballs authority IFAB approved the permanent use of five substitutes for all top-level matches, and announced that teams now have 15 substitutes on their team sheet instead of 12.FIFA said Thursday that no more than 26 people will be allowed to sit on the team bench during World Cup games (up to 15 substitutes and 11 team officials-one of whom must be the team doctor).
