Rampur (Uttar Pradesh) — December 8 — The Bharatiya Janata Party won the Rampur Sadar assembly seat, which was considered a stronghold of Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, on Thursday by a margin of over 34,000 votes.Azam Khan's rival, Akash Saxena, lost the seat six months after winning the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in June.Saxena defeated Asim Raza, a close aide to Azam who was bothered by the Rampur Lok Sabha bypolls as an SP candidate and now the Rampur Sadar assembly bypolls in a span of six months, along with BJP state president Bhupendra Chaudhary, several UP ministers, and many others, who lobbied to get Akash.In Rampur, former union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who hails from Rampur, held several door-to-door meetings.

Since 1977, he has contested 12 assembly elections, including one in which he has won ten times and lost twice.In the by-election held after Azam Khan became a Member of Parliament in 2019, his wife Tazeen Fatma contested and won.Asim Raja is now seeking a by-election in the by-election.Congress was a strong presence in the seventies and eighties.
