An official order reported that Arun Kumar Singh, the former chairman of BPCL oil refining and marketing firm, was today appointed chairman and managing director of ONGC, marking the first time a retired individual has been appointed chairman of a Maharatna PSU.Arun Kumar Singh, a former chief of BPCL, was appointed Chairman of ONGC on November 17.ONGC is India's second-largest oil and gas company, and is led by a mechanical engineer from the National Institute of Technology, Patna, who served as Director (Marketing) of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) from October 2018 to September 2022, when he was promoted to President (Africa & Australasia) by the oil ministry in October 2022.According to information published on the BPCL website, ONGC has lost a permanent chairman Since then, the company has had a record three interim heads.Arun Kumar Singh was admitted to the PSU board of directors after the oil ministry relaxed age-related eligibility requirements.

According to the ministrys office memo sent to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 17, the maximum age for external candidates is 57 years on the date of the job vacancy.The ministry modified it to stipulate that any candidate to be considered must be more than 60 years of age on the date of the vacancy.The vacancy occurred on March 31, 2021, the first time a retired individual was named chairman of a Maharatna corporation.According to sources, none of the ONGCs existing directors or the acting chairpersons who were considered eligible for the position until the ministry relaxed the eligibility requirements.
