Goa: In response to requests, PWD will build an underpass near the intersection of Safa Masjid

PWD will carry out the construction work as well as the proposed approach road of Khandepar bridge . PWD has completed the widening works on the Goa-Karnataka highway, which runs from Par-Khandepar to Shapur-Ponda .

PONDA: Three years after locals in Shapur and Chirputem in Bandora village pleaded for an underpass near Safa Masjid in Shapur, the public works department's national highway division (PWD) has announced plans to pursue the initiative.PWD will carry out the construction work as well as the proposed approach road of Khandepar bridge. It will also undertake the redevelopment of a small road stretch in Kerye, Khandepar.Shapur is situated on the outskirts of Ponda village.

Nonetheless, it has failed to make appropriate arrangements for people living in Shapur and Chirputem. To reach Shapur and Chirputem, residents are compelled to walk up to Farmagudi circle.Over 200 people from these two regions protested on July 7, 2019, demanding an underpass near Safa Masjid in Shapur, arguing that PWD was ineffective.Since vehicles heading from Ponda town to Farmagudi, Bandora, KTC bus stand, and vice-versa arrive at this point, the junction opposite Safa Masjid has become chaotic for motorists, while pedestrians have to wait for a long time to cross the intersection due to heavy traffic.

According to PWD, a proposal in this regard has already been submitted to the Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), and the ministry has accepted the proposal and is waiting for funding.According to him, we have estimated an investment of Rs 80 crore for the underpass, an access road to Khandepar bridge, and a small stretch of road at Kerye.
