AHMEDABAD (from the EMRI 108 emergency services reports has revealed that one child, mostly a girl, has been abandoned in the state every month since January.Although in some cases even fetuses are uncovered, in others children are dumped on the roadside or in public areas from where they are rescued and sent to hospitals. They are then transferred to state government observation homes, where they are declared apte to be adopted after a stipulated period.According to an analysis of EMRI 108 data for 2022, five out of eight cases were girls.

The girls are often abandoned because the parents, or even mother, do not want a male child because they fear reprisals from in-laws.Sometimes, if the child has any recognizable disabilities or congenital abnormalities, they are abandoned. The parents can be traced in some cases, but in the majority of cases, the children end up in observation homes, according to a child safety officer.
