AHMEDABAD (Gujarat): Just days before the opening of the metro corridor on September 30, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Gujarat Metrorail Corporation Limited have squabbled over who will be responsible for road improvements along the corridor.Metrorail officials have maintained that they are only responsible for road repairs that are 3 meters wide on either side of the corridor. On the other hand, the municipal corporation has put its foot down and demanded that GMRC pay for the entire road stretch resurfacing.Officials from the metro rail project and the AMC met recently to discuss their roles.

With the GMRC refusing to invest in resurfacing beyond 3 meters in width, the AMC is likely to be responsible for an additional Rs 10 crore. We are just too close to the deadline to decide who will spend money on road resurfacing. We will work out the issue with GMRC and recover the sum they received shortly. But, a senior AMC official explains, we must do repairs for the time being.

For the past five years, there has been a lot of bickering, particularly after the monsoon, when roads need extensive repairs. The AMC has been criticizing poor road conditions due to shifting underground utilities like drainage and stormwater lines along the metro corridor.According to an AMC official, most roads along the corridor were destroyed in a few days because contractors failed to ensure adequate soil compaction.
