Hardik Patel, the BJP leader in New Delhi, won the Viramgam constituency today, defeating Congressman Lakhabhai Bharwad by over 50,000 votes.As part of the movement, he was called Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) and was a member of the Sardar Patel Group (SPG), a Gujarati community social group, but fell out with the party's leadership, resulting in his membership in the BJP.Mr Patel had argued that Congress and its top leaders in Gujarat were deterring him from serving him today.Viramgam is now considered to be distinct from caste politics because it includes leaders from various sections of society and religions, including a minority group, who have represented it so far.The last time the BJP controlled Viramgam constituency was in the 2007 elections.
Other key promises included the construction of a modern sports complex, schools, 50-bed hospitals in Mandal taluka, Detroj taluka, and near Nal Sarovar, 1,000 government houses in Viramgam town, an industrial estate, gardens, etc.
