Head of TN government school declines to raise the tricolour on Independence Day

CHENNAI: Following allegations of a government school headmistress reportedly refusing to hoist the national flag and salute it on Independence Day, a scandal has erupted in Tamil Nadu.Tamil Selvi, a government school Headmistress in Dharmapuri district, did not hoist the national flag, declaring herself a Christian and that her religious beliefs prohibit her from hoisting and saluting the flag.She said that her religious conviction, as a Yahova Christian, allows her to salute only God in a video clip justifying her conduct.She continued to assert that she does not disrespect the flag and that she had ordered the Assistant Headmistress to hoist it.

The District Education Officer investigated the case.When she was in a government academy, she was accused of displaying a bias towards one faith.Last year, the headmistress did not attend the flag hoisting ceremony, and had taken sick leave.
