New Delhi, India, May 14: Dr AB Subbaiah, a retired India goalkeeper and two-time Olympian, emphasized the importance of the Hockey India Coaches Education Pathway, which will be a determining factor in the sport's development to the next level in 2021.Subbaiah spoke openly about creating a strong grassroot structure by training the domestic-level coaches with the right skills and branding it as a game changer. We should have taken to coaching in the grassroots immediately after my generation of players called it quits. It's encouraging to see many of the international players who recently retired are now coaching at the domestic level, and they are open to re-learning or updating themselves with the latest coaching techniques in world hockey offered by the Hockey India Coaches Pathway, said Subbaiah, who recently retired as the high-performance director of the Khelo India Centre for Excellence in Bengaluru.

Subbaiah said that this sport has greatly evolved in recent decades, citing the overwhelming desire he felt in taking up the challenge.Rolling substitution had just been introduced when we played, and we would most likely have three substitutions in the entire series. The game is fast now that four quarters pass, and I personally believe that if we want to give back to the sport something worthwhile, we must be equipped with the right knowledge that is up to par with international standards of coaching, particularly at the grassroots level. If we want to see ourselves winning more Olympic medals and the World Cup in the coming years, I believe this will be a very valuable component.

PSUs have played a vital role in providing players with employment security for decades. There have been so many players who try the sport, and companies such as IOCL are recruiting young female players on the basis of their performances, although previously the women would have been employed in Railways or SAI, etc., but with petroleum companies providing jobs for women players, it will be a world of good, he said.Subbaiah continued to stress that exclusive National Championships for Departments and Academies would provide a larger pool of participants at the domestic level, which would benefit the sport.Players must choose to represent their state, organization, or academy, according to him, with Hockey India introducing exclusive National Championships for Departments and Academies.
