Madurai: Officials from Madurai's food safety department seized and destroyed 100 kg of rotten mangoes from various shops at the Mattuthavani fruit market on Friday, inspected more than 20 shops and seized the rotten mangoes.They also told the shopkeepers not to sell such mangoes.Officials said the mangoes were rotten and not artificially ripened.Farmers supply only fresh mangoes to the traders, but some of the remaining mangoes were discovered to have been rotten.

Jayaramapandian said, We are monitoring closely.Officials cautioned mango growers to only use the permitted methods for natural ripening.During the mango season, it is not unusual for some farmers to attempt artificially ripening by using calcium carbide or ethylene.
