Indian-Origin MP Secures Bhopal Gas Tragedy Debate in UK Parliament

London, December 18, 1984: Navendu Mishra, an Indian-origin Opposition Labour Party MP for Stockport in northern England and chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for India (Trade and Investment), called on the UK government to demand that Dow Chemical, the owner of Union Carbide, face charges in India for far too long, said Mr Mishra.Action for Bhopal, the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, the trade union Unison, the British TUC, and Indian civil society and trade unions have all demanded that the victims be compensated, environmental protection, medical services and research, and support has been provided by the victims, he said.The tragedy at the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal is widely remembered as one of the worst industrial accidents in history, according to Anne-Marie Trevelyan, minister of state in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), in the UK's response to the crisis on December 3, 1984.Up to half a million more people have been diagnosed with serious conditions, and it has resulted in premature deaths.
