New Delhi (New Delhi): The Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education (IASE), Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia, celebrated International Day of Sign Languages on Friday.This day is part of the 2017 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution, and it falls under the umbrella of the International Week of Deaf People, which occurs every year during the last week of September.This year's theme is Building inclusive communities for All, which will take place between the 19th and the 25th of September 2022.The course started with the Quran recitation in accordance with JMI's tradition.

Prof. Naheed Zahoor was greeted by Dr. Sara Begum in the first half of the conference, followed by a Chief Guest Address.They shared some insightful insights on the day's theme: Sign Languages, Unite Us, and its contribution to the rise of inclusion.The International Day of Sign Languages was commemorated with a short note from Dr. Pettala Ramakrishna, program co-ordinator and Assistant Professor of Special Education (Hearing Impairment).He highlighted the value of Sign Language in the lives of people with Hearing Loss as well as its universal significance as a new method of communication.

The students then performed a small skit to emphasize the importance of Sign Languages in our day-to-day life.The students thereafter implemented Finger Spelling alphabets and Numbers in ISL.Mr. Mohd took the Indian Sign Language Pledge, which was eventually implemented by him.Zuber, Assistant Professor & B.Ed Coordinator, teaches at Stanford University.
