Many from the JD(U) are contesting the lone seat in the RS byelection.

JD(U) national election officer and K C Tyagi, the partys national secretary general, are front runners for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar . The byelection was prompted by the death of seven-time Rajya Sabha member Mahendra Prasad .

Patna, December 27, 2013: Aneel Hegde, the JD(U)s national election officer, and K C Tyagi, the party's national secretary general, have emerged as front runners for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar.The byelection was prompted by the death of seven-time Rajya Sabha member and pharmaceutical baron Mahendra Prasad on December 27 last year.The byelection will be held on May 30 by the Election Commissions.Prasad, who is commonly known as King Mahendra among his followers, will take the Rajya Sabha for the seventh time as a nominee of several political parties.

Other NDA allies in Bihar have agreed to leave the vacant seat for the JD(U) seat and support the JD(U) candidate in the byelection, according to sources.The term of the new member, who was selected by this bypoll, will expire on April 2, 2024.According to JD(U), if any member of the late King Mahendra's family comes to serve as the party's secretary, the party's board will be able to endorse such a candidate.No one in the Prasads family has staked their claim so far.

However, Sharma hasn't responded to or declined the invitation until now.If no member from the Prasads family comes forward, the party leadership will select a person from the organisation.Aneel Hegde, the party's national election officer who has been monitoring the organization polls for the past several years, and K C Tyagi, the party's national secretary general, have emerged as the front runners, according to a senior JD(U) official.Hegde is a native of Mangalore in Karnataka.He is said to be close to Nitish.

Tyagi took the Rajya Sabha as JD(U) candidate in a byelection in February 2013.His term ended in July 2016.According to sources in JD(U), the party may wish to send Tyagi to the Upper House for a two-year term to offset his earlier short-term success.According to another leader, JD(U) national general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan, who led the party's victory in assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur, is also doing the rounds as a potential candidate for the RS bypoll.

Though three days have passed since the publication of the byelection notice, no one has yet to present their nomination papers.The deadline for submitting nomination papers is May 19.According to JD(U), CM Nitish Kumar would announce the name of the party candidate on the last date of nomination or just a day before, as has been the case in the past.
