Measles Is Currently A Global Threat Because Of The Covid Pandemic, Says WHO

World Health Organization and CDC say measles cases may increase in the coming years . WHO and CDC say 95 per cent vaccination coverage needed to prevent epidemics .

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the USpublic health organization, there is now a possibility of measles spreading in various regions around the world, as COVID-19 led to a constant decrease in vaccination coverage and poor surveillance of the virus. However, it needs 95 per cent vaccination coverage to prevent epidemics among populations, according to the WHO and the USCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in a joint study.Although measles cases haven't increased dramatically relative to previous years, the WHO's measles lead, Patrick OConnor, said on Tuesday that now is the time to take steps. The next 12-24 months will be tough, OConnor said, because of the persisting social distancing strategies and the cyclical nature of measles, but it may be possible that the disease's status has increased since the start of 2022, increasing from 19 to almost 30 by September, and said that the WHO has already seen an increase of large disruptive outbreaks.
