Meeting in Sanvordem becomes heated over a major development project

Villagers demand that all permissions to a proposed mega construction in the village be withdrawn . Villagers say the scheme was approved during the period when the panchayat was under the administration .

Margao: On Sunday, residents at the Sanvordem gram sabha held in Margao witnessed chastising scenes, demanding that all permissions to a proposed mega construction in the village be withdrawn.Villagers explained that the proposed scheme was approved during the period when the panchayat was under the administration just before the panchayat elections, and that it restricted the only access to their homes and properties. However, the project promoters denied that they had received all approvals for the initiative, which they argued was unfounded. The initiative was carried out by the administrator when there was no elected body.

We therefore demand that the scheme be reversed and that all permits for the project be immediately voided, a villager said at the gram sabha.Siddhi Pauskar, a panchayat member who represents the ward where the construction scheme is planned, said that the panchayat would thrash out an amicable solution by listening to both sides, and that it is the panchayat's job to give them a hearing and resolve their problems.Governance is for the individual. They have been here for a long time, and so their concerns must be heard and a compromise must be struck, she said.Sarpanch Chinmaya Naik told reporters that although the issue was discussed at the gram sabha, it was unable to be discussed properly due to the meeting's chaos.

At the meeting, a large unit of police officers was deployed to keep any law and order situation at bay.
