TRICHY (Travichy)-Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) held a consultation meeting on Thursday with stakeholders to investigate the feasibility of implementing a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) project in Trichy city.In coordination with Trichy corporation and state highways department, a comprehensive urban mobility plan and a detailed feasibility study will be developed for establishing a model that suits the area and satisfying the needs of the region, which also includes the urban agglomeration.CMRL managing director M A Siddique, district collector M Pradeep Kumar, and Trichy corporation commissioner Dr R Vaithinathan addressed plans to identify potential and feasible routes for the proposed MRTS.The proposed expansion is expected to cover an area of about 803 sq km, including the trichy city center (without it) which is approximately 167 sq km.

For the purpose of compiling the feasibility report, suburban areas including Samayapuram, Thuvakudi, and around 103 villages should be investigated outside of the capital.The aim is to simplify the existing public transportation system.Siddique said that we will soon create a comprehensive mobility strategy to further refine the MRTS plan.
