Kolkata, Jan. 19, 2019: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), the ruling party in Meghalaya, has begun voting candidates for the forthcoming assembly elections, which are scheduled early next year, including the BJP and the United Democratic Party (UDP), which is the second largest party in the alliance.The alliance has released its first list of candidates, who will represent 32 constituencies in the forthcoming Assembly elections.Metbah Lyngdoh, the president of the United Nations Development Program, said there is a growing demand for a strong-independent political alternative that could stand up to the state's aspirations.Metbah Lyngdoh, the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, will contest from the Mairang seat.
During the visit, the party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to address her party's agenda for the Assembly elections.Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will lead her party, making it the state's largest opposition party.TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee visited the state on a two-day trip last month, inaugurating the party's office in the Teteng Aja locality in the town of Tura and advising that the group will campaign in the state under Mukul Sangmas' leadership.The Meghalaya Assembly has 60 seats and elections are set to take place in February next year.
