More than 8,000 Indians are detained in jails abroad: MEA

New Delhi, India, December 9: Over 8,000 Indians are currently held in international jails, out of which 4,389 are held in Gulf countries, according to Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan.The number of Indian prisoners held in foreign jails, including under-trials, is currently 8441, out of which 4,389 are held in jails of Gulf countries (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman), according to MoS Muraleedharan, who was responding to a query in Lok Sabha.MoS said that as part of the TSP Agreement, Indian nationals incarcerated in UAE jails will be allowed to leave the country of citizenship for the remainder of their term, and vice versa.This comes after the case of eight former naval officers who were arrested in Doha again came into the spotlight.

The matter is being actively pursued by our embassy.We understand that detained Indians are now able to communicate with their families in India by phone, but some of them have families in Doha, according to a MEA spokesperson.Several detainees have families in Doha and are being allowed to have physical meetings on a weekly basis, according to a MEA spokesperson.We will continue to provide any consular assistance and seek further consular assistance from these individuals.
