Following a high-level meeting at Mantralaya hosted by home minister Dilip Walse Patil on Thursday, the Maharashtra government approved a proposal to increase the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) on 120-acre plot in Katol. The meeting included senior police officers as well. The battalion was supposed to arrive at Akola a few years earlier, but it was relocated to Hingna due to the lack of official land. The idea was accepted for Katol by zilla parishad member Salil Deshmukh, the son of former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh.

Anil Deshmukh had devised a master plan for resurrecting a state-owned police force (SRPF) at Katol. The all-women battalion was changed to the IRB because the project was delayed due to technical issues.
