SEOUL (SEOUL) — During her Asian tour earlier this week, North Korea has branded US house speaker Nancy Pelosi the greatest destroyer of global peace and stability, accusing her of inciting anti-North Korea sentiment and enraging China. After visiting Taiwan, Pelosi returned to South Korea, where China began conducting military exercises, including missile attack training in waters near the self-governing island.China views Taiwan as a part of its own territory that could be annexed by force if necessary.Pelosi met with Kim Jin Pyo, speaker of the South Korean national assembly, in a border zone with North Korea.

Pelosi was slammed on Saturday by Jo Yong Sam, the director general of the North Korean foreign ministry's press and information affairs department, for her trip to the border and her discussion of anti-North Korean deterrence. In a statement issued by state media, Jo said Pelosi, who had been chastised by China for destabilizing regional stability by visiting Taiwan, inflamed the atmosphere of tension with North Korea during her stay.Jo argued that Pelosi's behavior in South Korea reinforced the Biden administrations' anti-North Korean rhetoric, calling her the biggest savior of international peace and stability.Jo cautioned that it would be a terrible mistake for her to think she can go scot-free on the Korean Peninsula.

Pelosis' visit to the Joint Security Area along the Korean border on Thursday made her the most high-profile American to visit there since then-President Donald Trump visited in 2019 for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.The area is jointly controlled by the United Nations Command and North Korea, and is located within the world's most heavily fortified border. In times of animosity with North Korea, US presidents and other top officials have also travelled to the area to reiterate their security ties with South Korea.Pelosi made no public statements against North Korea during her JSA visit.

Following North Korea's brutal run of missile tests earlier this year, tensions on the Korean Peninsula have risen dramatically.North Korea is well prepared to carry out its first nuclear weapons test in five years, according to US and South Korean officials. In an apparent remark on US-led international sanctions on the North and its regular military drills with South Korea, North Korea has stated that it would not return to denuclearization talks and instead concentrate on expanding its nuclear program.North Korea released a statement on Wednesday chastising the US and assisting China, its main ally and biggest aid benefactor, after Pelosi recalled Washingtons commitment to defending democracy on the self-governing island.
