The Assam State AIDS Control Society (ASACS) celebrated World AIDS Day on Thursday with a flurry of activities throughout the state, including Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister Keshab Mahanta was speaking as chief guest.Officials said that ASACS has carried out several activities to raise HIV awareness among the community in all Assam districts, such as rallies, public meetings, and other activities.As part of the initiative, Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta will launch 10 numbers of OPD-OST (Opioid Substitution Therapy) Dispensing Centres in ten districts of Assam, including TRB Civil Hospital, Kamrup, SMK Civil Hospital, Nalbari, Morigaon Civil Hospital, LGB Tinsukia Civil Hospital, Dhubri Civil Hospital, SK Roy Civil Hospital, Hailakandi, As per the NACO HIV Estimation Report 2021, Assam has 25,073 people living with HIV (PLHIV).45 percent of PLHIVs are female, and 3 percent are children, out of this total number.
Officials said that India's HIV prevalence rate is 0.21 and Assam's rate is 0.09 percent, which is lower than the national and national prevalence rate of 0.21 percent, while Kachar district (5200), Nagaon (1602) district, and Dibrugarh (1402).According to the method of transmission in Assam, 81.63 percent is by heterosexual, 5.54 percent by blood and blood products, while 2.61 is not specified.
