Other NE institutes must be supported by IIT-Guwahati: Mr. Droupadi Murmu, president

President Droupadi Murmu said the premier technology institute must develop other centers in the region to improve the overall academic environment at IIT-Guwahati . Murmu said the region should be the torch bearer of knowledge transfer and instilling a scientific temperament in the country .

GUWAHATI (GUWAHATI) — President Droupadi Murmu emphasized on Thursday that IITs play a larger role in preparing state-level organizations.Murmu said that the premier technology institute must develop other centers in the region to improve the overall academic environment at IIT-Guwahati on the first day of her first visit to Assam as President.The NE region's IIT-Guwahati is a knowledge center that can provide technological solutions to connectivity issues and other challenges.Since it is the only IIT in the NE zone, it must take on the responsibility of supporting other institutions in the region, collaborate with the state government and the army to widen our boundaries, and provide technological solutions to prevent the occurrence of natural disasters in the area, she said.

She said the region should be the torch bearer of knowledge transfer and instilling a scientific temperament in the country in the spirit of the Constitution.On the occasion, Murmu also installed Param-Kamrupa in IIT-Guwahati, northeasts most powerful supercomputer, as well as a laboratory for the design and development of high-power microwave components at the institute.From the IIT-Guwahati campus, she literally opened Dhubri Medical College and Hospital in western Assam and also lays the foundation stones for two zonal institutes of National Institute of Virology in Dibrugarh (Assam) and Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh).Murmu said that the impressive supercomputer facility at IIT-Guwahati would help the university address challenges in areas such as healthcare, quantum computation, big data analysis, advanced weather forecasting, and other fields.

The President maintained that science and technology institutes should ultimately serve for the greater good of society and said the National Education Policy 2020 explicitly states that solving today's socioeconomic challenges requires high-quality, joint research that cannot be imported.Murmu said that the northeast is making significant strides toward growth and extraordinary efforts to provide affordable healthcare and education that are not limited to the area.She applauded the Assam government's plan to assist IIT-Guwahati in the establishment of a multispecialty hospital, saying it will set a precedent for other prestigious institutes in the region.She said it is comforting that IIT-Guwahati has built a 3D-printed sentry post for constructing a cost-effective and sustainable Army defence system.
