CALANGUTE — Long or festive weekends, like the latest Independence Day weekend, are becoming lucrative for rent-a-bike operators along the coast of Calangute-Candolim.According to sources, the recruiting rate for two-wheelers has increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for the August 13-15 weekend.Such was the demand that there was a huge car shortage.Suppliers said operators were calling friends and relatives in the hopes of finding a spare two-wheeler.

The typical cost for a two-wheeler is around Rs 250-300 per day.On weekends, this can reach Rs 1,000, as the visitors are a lot more likely to visit, as the majority of domestic tourists prefer to drive a two-wheeler rather than ride in tourist taxis, which are comparatively costly. One of the contributing factors is a lack of public transportation connections to popular tourist spots such as Fort Aguada or between tourist hotspots like Calangute and Anjuna.Car rental rates, on the other hand, rise just marginally by a few hundred dollars.
