CHANDIGARH, India — Haryana Police has issued an alert urging people not to reveal any details about phishing emails sent to them regarding unpaid electricity bills, as well as a contact number.A Haryana Police spokesperson told the people to be aware of such scammers, indicating that the recent trend of cybercrime has occurred in which cyber criminals have begun tricking people into paying their electricity bill. They send text messages pretending to be from trustworthy sources in order to persuade people to click on links that install malware to steal personal and financial information. We are constantly trying to help the people by reminding them not to fall into the trap of such fraudsters.

The phishers attempt to persuade the victim to release their bank account details to ensure that they can verify previous payments once the victim contacts the given number. They were also asked to install remote access programs such as Anydesk, Team viewer, etc.Once the victim updates the information by following the instructions, the fraudster's account is put under surveillance. The spokesperson cautioned people to be extremely suspicious of such criminals and told them not to reveal their personal data or phone number without knowing the person or organisation well.

People should also avoid clicking on links in suspicious text, as this could install malware on your computer.Nonetheless, if you become a victim, report any such incidents to the cybercrime.gov.in portal or the nearest police station.
