Kochi: The Kerala high court decided to take a stand on its own on Friday against the hartal proclaimed by the radical Islamic group Popular Front of India (PFI) and subsequent sporadic incidents of violence in the region.The court ruled that hartal was previously barred from conducting business, and that the demolition of public property cannot be accepted.The court also ordered the state department to take tough measures against those who violate the court order ban on hartals.It also asked the government to use all means possible to combat any form of violence.

The PFI called the hartal on Thursday to protest the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other agencies raiding its offices and residences of its leaders, and their subsequent detentions on Thursday for allegedly funding terrorist activities in the region.
