Kolkata: The state irrigation department and the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will work together to restore the encroachers who have been living on the banks of Bagjola canal for many years.Senior officials from the state irrigation department and the BMC took a look at the encroachment along the canal's banks from Kestopur to Rajarhat on Wednesday.On the banks of the Bagjola canal, from Kestopur to Santimoynagar bridge, several unauthorised shanties were discovered.According to a BMC official, a poll will be conducted to determine the precise number of encroachers there.

To flush out the excess water after heavy rainfall, the Bagjola canal serves as a major drainage outlet channel for Salt Lake, New Town, and Rajarhat-Gopalpur districts.According to a spokesperson, no further encroachment will be permitted on the canal side.According to locals, many shanties have formed on the canal banks in the last ten to twelve years.Many of these illegal facilities are also being used for commercial use, such as grocery stores and restaurants.
