PUNE: To minimize road accidents and traffic chaos, the Alandi police traffic division suspended the carrying of heavy vehicles through the temple town of Alandi on Thursday. The decision was taken in the aftermath of two serious accidents, including the death of a school girl. For the past few months, local residents and opponents have pushed for the ban.Police have initiated heavy vehicular traffic along the Charholi bypass, according to the officers.

We can encourage them to drive through the area after 11 p.m., but the streets are often empty at this time.We are yet to make a decision. The town is accessible by road as it cuts the total distance between the industrial areas of Solu, Markal, Sanswadi, Shikrapur, Bhosari, and Chakan.According to police, the roads are narrow and lacking space for large vehicles like wagons and buses.

Several new housing developments have been introduced in and around the town.Due to traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, many working professionals are having trouble getting around the city. The decision was therefore critical, according to Arjun Medankar, an Alandi activist.Sudam Kolekar, a regular visitor to the place, said, Crossroads are inevitable for heavy vehicles, which cause traffic jams on certain parts of the road.

In the meantime, a group of managers and representatives of the industries in Solu and Markal reported that the Chakan-bound vehicles are now traveling an additional 8 kilometers due to the restrictions.
