Quickly pay the cane price using the subsidy: UP sugar mills in the centre

LUCKNOW: The Centre cautioned sugar mills on Thursday that they should stop the subsidy if it is not used in the payment of the cane price to the farmers.The result was made at a review meeting of the cane development department, in the presence of joint secretary, ministry of food and public distribution system, Subodh Kumar Singh, and the additional chief secretary, cane development, Sanjay Bhoosreddy.Singh said that sugar mills must use the Centre's subsidies to provide timely payments of cane prices to farmers.Those who do not do so may be barred from the subsidies, he said.

The centre's position comes almost a month after the cane crushing season comes to an end.The state government has urged the sugar mills to accelerate their payment to the farmers and clear the rising arrears.The ruling BJP in UP has been pushing the mills to pay the cane prices, an issue that had taken on broader social form during the recent UP elections, particularly in west UP.Bhoosreddy emphasized the recovery of Potash from the boiler ash produced in the mills.
