Last week, the Senate confirmed President Joe Biden's appointment of Indian-American lawyer Roopali H Desai to serve as a US circuit judge for the ninth circuit.Desai, whose parents immigrated from India, will be the first South Asian woman appointed to the high court after taking her oath.Her Desais confirmation is considered to be a milestone due to the massive bipartisan support with which she has now secured the most votes of any circuit court nominee under the Biden administration.Desai was nominated for the judgeship on June 15 and she appeared before the Senate judiciary committee on July 13.Desai will fill a vacant seat left vacant by circuit Judge Andrew D. Hurwitz's appointment to senior status, upon completion of her judicial commission.Desai has been a partner at law firm Coppersmith Brockelman in Phoenix since 2013, where she practiced since 2007.She worked at Lewis & Roca in Phoenix from 2006 to 2007.Desai was born in Toronto and earned her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Arizona Honors College in 2000; her masters degree in public health from the University of Arizona, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, in 2001; and her juris doctor from the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law, in 2005. She clerked for then Chief Judge Mary M. Schroeder of the US court of appeals for the ninth circuit from 2005 to 2006.Desai has been a member of the American Law Institute since 2021.She has served on several community boards, including the Arizona Center for Law in the public interest, where she served as president of the board of directors from 2015 to 2017.Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, the United States territory of Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands are included in the ninth circuit.
